Historian Edward Hallett Carr once observed that history is “a dialogue between past and present”. The history faculty at Dominican College invites you to join the conversation as a history major or minor in the historic Lower Hudson Valley, so you can prepare yourself to compete and succeed in just about any profession.
While studying to complete your history degree, you’ll gain knowledge of human actions throughout time, giving you an in-depth understanding of what it means to be human as well as a means to predict what others will do and make informed decisions. You’ll also build critical life and career skills that will make you a valuable addition to any team.
As a history student. you’ll have the opportunity to do plenty of hands-on learning as you participate in collaborations with local museums (especially the Orangetown Historical Museum and Archives, and the U.S. Military Academy Museum at West Point, with which we have special program relationships), historical societies, the Dominican College Archives, and various community organizations that focus on preserving history. And you’ll experience lots of excitement as you celebrate history through Camp Shanks, the Battle of Bataan, Colonial Day celebrations, historical debate, and a local history-based scavenger hunt.
We also conduct a variety of field trips and will encourage and support you in securing an internship. And you’ll get to interact with experienced historians from within and beyond academia and teaching, to learn from their wisdom and experiences and be inspired by their successes.
Dominican College has an active history club and a vigorous debating society (among many other wonderful clubs and societies that are open to all students), which you will be welcome to join to both deepen your knowledge and expand your horizons. During your studies, you’ll also have the opportunity to present at the regional Phi Alpha Theta Undergraduate Research Conference.
Going to Dominican College changed my life forever. The history professors helped me realize the potential that others had always seen in me. My studies at Dominican College helped me gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live out my dream as a social studies teacher. Thank you, Dominican College. Go Chargers!
