Summary of Requirements
The Traditional Option requires a total of 131 credits, including a minimum of 70 liberal arts credits and our 61-credit sequence of professional nursing courses.
Liberal Arts Requirements: A firm background in liberal arts is what distinguishes the BSN from other nursing degrees, and what develops the well-rounded and nuanced perspective held by the most sensitive – and successful – professionals in the health care field. The Liberal Arts component of Dominican College’s nursing program will help you acquire the sensitivity and perspective you need, and will prepare you for our nursing curriculum by providing a strong foundation in the physical, natural and social sciences.
As part of the completion of Dominican College’s General Education Curriculum (G.E.C.), nursing students must complete two courses in Mathematics; one Introduction to Philosophy course (Discovery of Reason, God & the Medieval Mind, or Discovery of Freedom); Anatomy and Physiology I & II; Chemistry; Biochemistry; Microbiology; and Pathophysiology.
In addition, 15 semester hours in the Social Sciences are required, including General Psychology 102: Social Bases of Human Behavior; Developmental Psychology I and II; and one course in Sociology.
Nursing Requirements: Whatever area of professional nursing you choose, Dominican College’s 61-credit undergraduate Nursing curriculum provides you with the knowledge and practice you need to excel. Our professional courses combine academic lecture and clinical laboratory experience, engaging you in intense academic study and in hands-on learning that stresses critical thinking, decision-making, and interpersonal communication with clients and their families. Courses include Nursing Transitions; Introduction to Professional Nursing I and II; Pharmacologic Agents; Professional Practice Concepts; Principles of Health Assessment; Nursing Research; Parent-Child Nursing; Adult Nursing I and II; Family Health Nursing; Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing; Community Health Nursing; Nursing Leadership/Management; and a Nursing Seminar that focuses on professional development.
