A study of the concept of freedom as self-determination, as it emerged from the French Revolution, as it was formulated by 19th-century thinkers such as Hegel, Marx, and Dostoevsky, as ethics explored by 20th-century thinkers such as Sarte and Heidegger, and as it is affecting 21st-century thinking about the person and about political self-determination.
