Accelerated Option

About the Option

The Dominican College Division of Nursing offers a baccalaureate nursing curriculum that combines classroom and laboratory instruction with up-to-date clinical experience in a wide variety of health care settings. The nursing program is approved by the New York State Education Department and fully accredited by the Office of the Professions and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The College mission of leadership, excellence, and service supports a nursing program that integrates high patient care standards with nursing scholarship.

Summary of Requirements

The 12-month Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) Weekday Option is available for applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree in another discipline. The 58-credit curriculum includes all the components of the Traditional Nursing Option in an accelerated, back-to-back trimester format. Faculty are credentialed in their areas of expertise and experienced nurse educators. The full time, weekday schedule calls for students with motivation and dedication to their academics. The ABSN Option begins each May; all graduates are eligible to take the state licensing examination (NCLEX).

The 11 prerequisites for the ABSN Option are Sociology, General Psychology, Development Psychology I & II, Chemistry I, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology, Pathophysiology, and Statistics. English and Mathematics Placement Tests are prescribed by the Office of Admissions. All social science, science, mathematics prerequisites, and placement tests must be completed prior to starting the nursing program. A C+ minimum is required for all science prerequisites.

Admission to Dominican College and the ABSN Option

Candidates send their official transcripts to the Office of Admissions and complete an application to Dominican College. Admission to the ABSN Option is a separate process conducted by the Nursing Division. Criteria for admission include a minimum baccalaureate GPA of 2.7, completion and documentation of all prerequisites and placement tests, and the space available. It is recommended that applications be submitted by November 1st before the next ABSN Option begins.
